Actos

Actos

An Actos lawyer in Tennessee can fight for you!

People with Type II diabetes have used the drug Actos (pioglitazone hydrochloride) with the hope that they could improve their lives, but some have discovered the medication had the opposite effect. Actos is linked to serious and potentially deadly side effects, including heart problems and bladder cancer. If you or a loved one used Actos and experienced adverse side effects, don’t hesitate to contact an experienced Actos side effects lawyer in Johnson City. You may be entitled to compensation.

The following are some of the Actos side effects listed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration:

  • Bladder cancer — People using Actos may have an increased risk of suffering from bladder cancer. The FDA advises people not to take Actos if they are receiving treatment for bladder cancer. Symptoms of bladder cancer include blood in urine or red color in urine; an urgent need to urinate; pain while urinating and pain in the back or lower abdomen.
  • Liver problems — Symptoms of liver problems include nausea or vomiting, stomach pain, unusual or unexplained tiredness, loss of appetite, dark urine, and yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes.
  • Congestive heart failure — Symptoms of heart failure include swelling of the arms, hands, feet, ankles or lower legs; pain in stomach; sudden weight gain; shortness of breath; unusual tiredness; frequent dry cough; and rapid or irregular heartbeat.
  • Fractures — Women are particularly at risk of suffering fractures or broken bones in the hand, upper arm or foot.
  • Swelling in the back of the eye (macular edema) — Talk to your doctor right away if you experience changes in vision, including blurring, colors appearing “washed out” or wavy central vision.
  • Heart attacks
  • Strokes
  • Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)

Actos, manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceutical Company, was approved in 1999. The drug is a member of a class of medications that helps improve insulin sensitivity, or control blood sugar levels. Doctors also have prescribed Actos to patients who show early signs of diabetes. The active ingredient, pioglitazone, is contained in other drugs, including Actoplus Met, Actoplus Met XR, and Duetact.

Finding a link between Actos and bladder cancer

Research over 10 years suggested an increased risk of bladder cancer among Actos users. The Food & Drug Administration ordered Takeda Pharmaceutical to add a stronger warning label alerting users that patients with active bladder cancer or with a previous history of bladder cancer not use Actos.

Health officials in France and Germany stopped Actos sales in June 2011, citing information in the study. Other health risks linked to Actos include congestive heart failure, heart attacks, stroke and liver failure.

People who have used the drug for a long period of time (longer than one year) or at a higher dosage may have a higher risk of experiencing side effects of Actos.
